Approximately 11% people in both US and China are diabetics. Among them, about 5-10% suffers type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). The cost of health is huge. T1DM is resulted from the total loss or almost total loss of insulin producing pancreatic beta-cells. Exogenous insulin must be in daily based injected to correct the hyperglycemia and prevent complications. The best method is through an insulin pump. Currently all the clinical insulin administrations are in the open loop fashion, that is, insulin is injected according to proposed glucose level instead of truly measured plasma glucose concentration. To close the loop, it has been an endeavor of researchers and engineers to formulate effective, efficient and reliable models and develop control algorithms accordingly. In this talk, we showcase an integrated system consisting of body, glucose monitoring system (GMS), control model, and insulin injection by a pump. Our preliminary numerical simulations with actual clinical data from Carelink demonstrate that our model is more effective for the case of overnight control. This modular system could be enhanced to a true artificial pancreas system.

主讲人概况:

李嘉旭,美国路易斯维尔大学数学系副教授。主要从事数学生物学和动力系统的研究,在SIAM J Appl Math、J Theor Biol、Math Biosci等一流期刊发表论文30余篇,兼任多个国际期刊编委、特邀编缉。1996-2007年在美国高科技工业领域工作,任资深高级工程师。目前研究兴趣集中于人工胰脏的控制算法研究。
